Artist Profile: Durham’s Daughter of Swords releases a jaunty electropop album with “Alex”

DURHAM, NC — The latest album by Daughter of Swords finds the project’s mastermind, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, moving further away from the folky vibe and three-part harmonies of previous projects. Best known as a member of the trio Mountain Man, Sauser-Monnig seems intent on developing a sound that prioritizes exploration over familiarity, delving into themes of social class and identity.

Recorded at Betty's, the Chapel Hill studio owned by Sylvan Esso, “Alex” is a vibrant, synth-forward indie record produced in collaboration with longtime friends and collaborators: Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso, and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak. The result is a sonic landscape that juxtaposes playful, upbeat melodies with introspective and sometimes dark lyrics. Tracks like "Talk to You" and "Strange" exemplify this balance, blending danceable rhythms with thoughtful storytelling.

The journey to “Alex” has been both personal and geographical. Originally from Minnesota, Sauser-Monnig relocated to Durham in 2015, immersing themselves in the city’s vibrant, southern-flavored arts scene. This move has provided an eclectic backdrop that is clearly responsible for their evolving musical explorations.

With “Alex,” Sauser-Monnig delivers a fun, intriguing album that serves as both a deeply personal reflection and a wider commentary on the complexities of modern life.

The album is currently streaming on Spotify.
