Six Questions with Certain Seas

Former Squirrel Nut Zippers cofounder/vocalist Katharine Whalen and crew continue to create some of the catchiest and most eclectic indie folk around.

1. Can you share something about your band that most may not know?

We all met at The Cave in Chapel Hill in 2019! Danny and Katharine were performing as their duo Swedish Wood Patrol and Austin was running sound. A short period of several separate duos followed before everyone eventually conglomerated into Certain Seas.

2. How would you describe your sound or genre as opposed to, perhaps, how a snotty music critic might classify you?

Katharine coined the term "sparklefolk" to describe our sound and we think that makes sense. We try to create and inhabit sonic spaces orchestrally so that the whole is different from the sum of the parts.

3. What do you consider to be the biggest obstacle or challenge for an independent artist right now?

We try not to think about obstacles since we’re going to be making the music either way. It’s a joy to play together and we focus on that to the extent that it’s possible.

4. What NC artists/bands are you currently listening to?

There are SO MANY people making great music in North Carolina now. Here are some of our current favorites in no particular order: Ex Iguana, Cameron Stenger, Mystery Ranch, Open Field, Franky & The Slight Incline, Sam Thorn, Entrez Vous, Scrape, Tooth, Snide, Spencer Thomas Smith, Little Chair, Sweet Home, Lonnie Rott, David Prather, & Em Gee.

5. What advice would you give to younger, local artists just beginning to create and share their music?

Keep doing it! Have fun! Be nice.

6. Is there a particular upcoming NC show or event you’d like to promote?

We released a new record in October and just finished playing a bunch of shows to support that. Up next: Friday, April 10th at Local 506 in Chapel Hill; Saturday, April 18th at Volume Records in Hillsborough; Friday, April 24th at Berkeley Cafe in Raleigh; Saturday, May 9th at Yonder in Hillsborough; Saturday, May 30th at Panther Lake Fest in Raleigh.
